Middle East

The Middle East Gulf is heavily dependent upon exporting oil for revenue generation and consequently has a significant Middle East (iStockphoto)economic stake in any future international settlement to control and reduce emissions of CO2. Some countries have been particularly enthusiastic advocates of CCS technology while many have also recognised the massive potential for renewable energy, and particularly solar power, within the region. The region is already severely water-stressed and countries such as Syria, Israel and Jordan face huge problems in supplying enough water for human needs and agriculture.

Energy is cheap in Saudi Arabia, and it has one of the highest emission rates per capita in the world, however the country is investing millions of dollars in research and development for new solar and wind technology
