2009 is a critical year for the global effort to tackle dangerous climate change. Domestically and internationally, the UK is committed to being at the forefront of that effort.

Seminars in Europe on the Climate Change Act

A series of seminars focussing on the features and implementation of the Climate Change Act are being hosted by British Embassies in a number of countries.

Low carbon transport

Transport currently makes up 21% of all UK domestic carbon emissions. Carbon emissions from domestic transport will be reduced by up to 14% over the next decade as announced by Government's carbon reduction strategy

Consultation launched on connecting new power to the grid, helping tackle climate change and energy security

The UK hopes to speed up private sector investment in low carbon energy in the developing world with a groundbreaking market support initiative.

New business guidelines on GHG

New guidance to measure and tackle greenhouse gas emissions for businesses and organisations – alongside advice on what it means to be carbon neutral - has been published by Defra and DECC.

Act on CO2 ad

Act on C02 – the domestic, behaviour change counterpart to Act on Copenhagen – launches new advertisement screening nationally on TV and online.

Committee on Climate Change: Reports government's progress

The Committee on Climate Change launches its first annual report to Parliament on the progress made by Government on Carbon Budgets.

Low carbon industry

Governments must invest in a low-carbon industry, the head of the UK's Environment Agency and the chief executive of the world's largest engineering companies said in separate interventions.

National Policy Statements

The UK Government has unveiled its detailed vision for energy policy over the coming decades in six key areas that will help fulfil its ambition of meeting its legally binding targets for deep cuts in carbon emissions.
