Faith

With their local and global reach, faith groups are well placed to raise awareness of climate change, galvanising behaviour change amongst individuals and communities and mobilising support on climate issues both domestically and internationally.

The Judaism, Christianity, Islam religions and their denominations have shown their commitment to taking action on the environment. For example, The Church of England runs a Shrinking the Footprint programme, which aims to identify and reduce the Church’s carbon footprint by 20% of current levels by 2050.  Read Minister Joan Ruddock speech at their event which also garnered interest from other denominations and faiths.

In conjunction with Tearfund, Church of England also runs Carbon Fast, which encourages members of churches and their families to give up carbon for Lent by presenting a guide of simple actions they can take to reduce carbon from their lifestyle. Ed Miliband helped launch the 2009 Carbon Fast alongside the Bishops of London and Liverpool in April 2009.
